우 verbs and the amazing disappearing ㅂ

There is a special trick to the 우 verbs.  Here is a video where Rob Julien explains.

I just think of it as the amazing disappearing ㅂ.

Let’s look at the verb 춥다 to be cold.  Where did the ㅂ go to in present tense common conjugation 추워요 ?  Turns out, in this case you drop the ㅂ and it becomes 추우.

So, for 춥다 you have 추운.  The descriptive verb “to be cold” becomes a noun modifier (adjective) 추운.  The imperative is 추우세요.  This holds true for other similar verbs like 덥다 and 맵다.
