Hanja for Cimi: 門 door 문

門 gate, door 문

I remember this one as the scary monster behind the door from the Monki App for Chinese pictographs. Note that this is one example where the traditional Chinese used by Koreans 門 differs from the simplified modern Chinese 门. Just think of the hanja as looking like a traditional gate from a Korean historical drama.

Simplified at 3 strokes is easier than traditional at 8 strokes.

We may see a smaller component character placed inside of it like this: 間 (jian1).

Some of the Korean words associated with door

문벌 門閥  lineage, pedigree, birth, family
동문 同門 alumnus (alumni)
전문 專門 one’s specialty, one’s forte
부문 部門 field, sector
공공 부문 公共部門 public sector

Some Chinese words associated with this character.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to learn all these words.  This week, we will just learn

門 door 문
